The Denmark Vesey & The Spirit of Freedom Monument (DVSFM) Committee desires to create a  Monument to
recognize the tenacity and   vitality of the spirit of freedom among African-Americans in the
Carolina Low Country embodied in the efforts of Denmark Vesey and a number of

Description of Artist Opportunity

An artist commission will be awardedto develop, create and install a site specific monument in an urban Victorian park
setting where trees  create a cathedral like q
uality and sense of enclosure for the space.

One suggested proposal is a monument consisting of three figures; however, artists wishing to propose  other
concepts are encouraged. The  neighborhood is separated from the  park by an oval interior roadway and wooded lawns
stretching to the bordering streets. This neighborhood, Hampton Park Terrace, features a number of architectural styles
including Victorian, Moorish, Charleston single houses, Arts and Crafts bungalows, and vernacular Freedmen’s
cottages. Westside, an adjacent  neighborhood, traversed by Ashley Avenue which leads into Hampton  Park,
was the location of the legendary  “hanging tree.”

Description of Site

The site, located in Hampton Park  (Charleston, S.C.), adjacent to The Citadel, the Military College of South
Carolina, is at the convergence of South and Center axial paths behind  the bandstand.  Coastal Peninsular
Charleston,  South Carolina, environment is one  of wind, salt air, heat and humidity, and sun exposure.
The installation in
the Hampton Park setting should be considered permanent.
